The guy who sold me my pack at REI changed how I plan trips
I was at the REI in Denver last month buying a new Osprey 65L and the clerk asked me where I was headed. I said the Wind River Range for a 5 day loop. He told me he maps his water sources first, then plans his mileage around that, not the other way around. It hit different because I've always just picked a route first and dealt with water later, which has left me dry more than once. Anybody else do their planning backwards like I did?

That waiter shifting to water-first planning changes everything though, since you end up carrying way less weight and stressing way less about dry camps. It took me getting stuck without water twice before I finally listened to someone who knew what they were talking about.

What made you decide to stick with the old method even after getting caught dry a few times?
