The $12 rain cover that changed my mind on ultralight gear
I used to think any ounce saved was worth it, so I skipped the rain cover on my pack during a 4-day trip on the Appalachian Trail near Damascus. Two days of steady drizzle soaked my down bag and I ended up paying $30 for a motel night just to dry everything out. Now I carry the cheap 3-ounce cover every time, but I still wonder if a liner would work better for the same weight, anyone made that switch?
That Damascus rain is no joke, but your down bag would've been in trouble either way since pack liners only keep water out of the main compartment, not off your straps and pockets. I've run both and the liner saves weight but the cover keeps everything drier when it's really coming down.
