Rant: I used to plan my trips with a big paper map and a highlighter (like, a real one).

After a rainy trip in the Smokies where my map turned to mush, I switched to using the Gaia GPS app on my phone with offline maps. Anyone else have a favorite app for route planning that doesn't need cell service?

My old Delorme atlas got soaked on a Maine canoe trip. I’m all about OnX Backcountry now for offline topo maps.

Lost my DeLorme Maine atlas to a leaky Nalgene in the back of my Subaru. Switched to Gaia GPS last year and the offline maps saved me in the White Mountains when I had zero signal.

A buddy of mine had a similar disaster with a paper map on a fishing trip up near Katahdin. His whole route got washed out in a sudden downpour, just a blue and green blob in his hands. He switched to Gaia after that, kind of like zara512 mentioned. Now he plots his spots right on the phone, and even when he's way out there, the trail is still on his screen. It's a total game changer for staying found.
