Ran into an old thru-hiker at the grocery store who said he only uses a 28L pack now
He claimed anything bigger just encourages you to carry junk you don't need, but my 45L has been my go-to for 6 years and I can't imagine cutting that much, so who's actually right here or is it just different hiking styles?

My 40L has been perfect for 10 years, guess we all just find what works.

Not sure it needs to be a perfect match for a decade to count, @norag55. Maybe some of us just don't stress about packs the same way. Mine has a hole in the side pocket and I still use it every weekend. It's a bag, not a marriage. If it carries stuff without falling apart, that's basically a win. Ten years is great for you, but I'd be lying if I said I paid that much attention to gear longevity. Some of us are just happy when the zipper doesn't jam.
