PSA: That $120 GPS unit was a total lifesaver on the Lost Coast Trail

I almost didn't get it, thinking my phone would be fine... but the fog rolled in thick north of Shelter Cove and my phone lost signal. The dedicated GPS kept a lock the whole time and showed the exact tide cut-off points. Without it, I would have been stuck waiting for hours or tried a risky crossing. It felt like a lot for one piece of gear, but it turned a potential mess into a smooth trip. Anyone have other routes where a specific tool made all the difference?

Oh man, fog can get wild up there! I once got turned around in pea soup on a local ridge, my compass was the only thing that kept me from walking in circles.

Yeah @hugow30, a compass is a total lifesaver in that soup.
