Paid $180 for a quilt over a bag 7 seasons back and I still think about it every cold night
Back when I started doing overnight trips around Shenandoah, I was hauling a 3 pound synthetic bag that took up half my pack. A guy at a trailhead in Front Royal saw me stuffing it and asked why I wasn't using a quilt. I didn't know quilts were a thing. He pulled his out, showed me how the pad straps worked, and I went home and dropped $180 on a 20 degree down quilt. First trip out it got down near freezing and I slept warm with just my puffy on top. Seven seasons later it's still my main setup and my old bag lives in the garage. What sold me was how much room it freed up for food, which matters when you're doing 4 or 5 night stretches. The only knock is you have to get the strap tension right or you get drafts, and it took me a couple trips to dial that in. Anyone else make the switch and never look back?
