My water filter gave up 30 miles from the trailhead in Glacier
Headed out last Saturday on the Highline Trail and my Sawyer squeeze froze solid overnight in my pack, cracked the housing. I ended up boiling creek water with my camp stove for 2 days, which added about an hour to each morning. Anybody else carry a backup filter on longer trips or just risk it?
Man I gotta say, you're braver than me. I did the same thing with a Platypus filter on the JMT and spent the next two days drinking straight from the creek like a feral animal because I forgot my stove fuel. Boiling water for an hour each morning sounds like a luxury spa treatment compared to that. My backup plan now is just a pack of those tiny iodine tablets that taste like a public pool, but hey, they don't crack when the temp drops to 20. Nothing says wilderness like chugging water that smells like a band-aid.
