Got turned around in the fog on the Wonderland Trail

We were near Mowich Lake when the fog rolled in and I lost the trail markers. I pulled out my paper map and compass, found a creek on the map, and followed it downhill to a known campsite. Anyone have a good backup plan for when your GPS fails in bad weather?

You followed a creek downhill in that fog? Man, that's a bold move. Creek beds are super easy to slip on, all those wet rocks and roots. Plus you can get boxed in by a drop-off. Glad it worked out but that would make me nervous.

Was there an actual drop-off or just the worry of one?

Felt my stomach drop just reading that. Getting lost in the fog is a special kind of scary, where everything looks the same and sounds are muffled. I had a similar panic moment on a coastal trail when the sea mist came in thick and I couldn't see the next post. That feeling of being totally turned around is awful. What did you do to keep calm while you figured out your next move?
