Dropped $130 on a Garmin inReach before a Wind River trip and I still can't decide if it was worth it
Two friends and I did 5 days in the Wind Rivers last summer and I was the only one carrying a satellite messenger, which I bought for $130 on sale after my mom basically wouldn't let it go. One side of me says it's dead weight and money I could've spent on a better pad, since we had zero emergencies and my phone maps worked fine the whole time. The other side says we got caught in a nasty storm above 10,000 feet near Titcomb Basin and I was the only one who could've called for help if something went sideways. So now I'm stuck: is this just fear insurance, or is it actually part of a smart kit? Would love to hear from people who've carried one for a while, did you ever really need it?
