Can we talk about how I had my pack weight totally backwards for 3 seasons
I used to think lightweight gear meant spending a ton on fancy ultralight stuff. Then I did a trip on the Superior Hiking Trail last October with a guy who carried a 28 pound pack and still flew past me every day. I was huffing along with like 45 pounds thinking I was being smart by bringing all that extra food and a heavy tent. What tipped me off was when he showed me his setup: same amount of food, same tent space, but his base weight was like 12 pounds because he ditched the extras. I realized I had been packing for what if and not what I actually need. Now I go through every item and ask myself if I used it on the last 3 trips before I bring it. Anyone else have a wake up call about their pack weight?

28 pounds is basically a daypack compared to what I used to drag through the Boundary Waters. I cut a whole 8 pounds just by switching to a tarp and ditching my camp chair. Now if it didn't get used on the last two trips, it stays home.

Now if it didn't get used on the last two trips, it stays home." - So do you actually ever miss something you leave behind, or has that rule never backfired on you?
