A ranger in Colorado convinced me to ditch my paper map system
I used to plan every trip with printed topo maps and a highlighter, swore by it for 8 years. Last fall in Rocky Mountain National Park, a ranger watched me unfold my map at a junction and said "you're going to miss half the trail with that thing." She showed me how the park's GPS tracks on her phone picked up side paths and water sources that weren't on the old map. I switched to downloading offline routes on my phone and it took maybe 2 trips to get comfortable. Now I carry a paper backup but I follow the digital line, and I've found 3 great camp spots I would have walked right past. Anyone else made the jump from paper to digital mid-hike, and did you keep the paper for emergencies?
