Thought static wicks were overhyped until a King Air trip last Tuesday proved me wrong
Last Tuesday I was doing a quick preflight on a King Air 200 at our ramp in Boise when I noticed two static wicks snapped off the rudder. I almost signed it off as no big deal, since I figured they were just for lightning strikes, but our chief said nope, ground that plane. Turns out the comm radios had been getting scratchy on the last three flights and nobody could pin it down. We replaced the four wicks on that tail and the noise cleared up on the first ground check, just like that. I always thought those little things were icing on the cake, but now I get that they bleed off built up static so the antennas can actually do their job. Any of you run into weird radio noise that traced back to missing wicks instead of the antenna or coax?
