Old timer told me to stop using heat shrink on every spl ice

At my first job at Atlantic Aviation in Daytona, a guy named Bill with 30 years in the trade told me heat shrink was a crutch. I ignored him and kept using it on every single splice I made in a King Air 350. Six months later we found a bundle where the shrink had slipped down and exposed bare wire to a chafing point. He was right all along I should have used a proper splice and tape on that section. Anyone else run into old advice that turned out to be true the hard way?

Read somewhere that heat shrink actually causes more corrosion than tape in humid environments (like Florida, where I am). The shrink traps moisture against the wire instead of letting it breathe, which is why Bill probably hated it. I still use it for temporary repairs but tape with a proper wrap has saved my bacon on avionics trays.

A good wrap with tape lets in air and moisture too.
