Hot take: Our shop's pile of old avionics parts is an environmental shame.
We should be recycling these, not just trashing them.

That "environmental shame" ignores how INSANELY expensive recycling aviation components is.

Okay but @danielh81 what exactly makes it so crazy expensive? Is it the shipping and handling for heavy units, or are there just insane rules about taking them apart that eat up labor hours? Need the details here.

Yeah, it's not just the shipping. @kevin_hernandez83, a lot of those parts have to be taken apart in a very specific way because of the materials inside. That special handling is a huge part of the cost.
