Hot take: I was convinced my wire routing on the new Garmin installs was perfect until a senior tech in Denver pointed out I was ignoring thermal expansion near the firewall.

He said, 'Your bundle's too tight, it'll chafe in six months,' so I started leaving a deliberate 3/4 inch service loop in those high-heat zones, which feels wrong but has eliminated my callback rate.

That "feels wrong" part is the real lesson.

Oh geez, Oliver, actually the firewalls aren't the main enemy here. I've seen way more damage from tight bundles near patch panels and cable management arms where the bend radius gets completely ignored. That "feels wrong" instinct from Paige is spot on if you're catching a cable that's got tension at the plug where it enters the switch port. I once had a whole switch fail because someone wiggled a tight bundle of Cat6 while troubleshooting and broke the internal contacts.

Wait, you were running bundles tight near the firewall? That's a recipe for disaster. Paige_martin is totally right about the "feels wrong" lesson, because so much of this job goes against a rookie's gut instinct. It's wild how a tiny bit of slack can make such a huge difference long term. Did that senior tech show you any examples of the chafing he's seen?
