My dispatcher told me to meet the driver at a Denny's in Bakersfield, and his "rig" was a 1998 minivan with a trailer
He had my sedan strapped down with what looked like cam straps from a hardware store, and I stood there doing math on whether my car was about to become a bumper ornament on I-5. Turns out he moved 11 cars a cross-country trip that way and swore he'd only lost one mirror, which did not calm me down at all. Has anyone else had a broker hand off their car to someone who clearly was not running a real carrier?
Check the broker's paperwork before the driver even shows up. Ask for the carrier's MC number and look it up on the FMCSA site yourself, takes two minutes. If the name on the insurance cert does not match the company hauling your car, walk away, because that is exactly how these guys operate. Also snap pics of the straps and the plates before he pulls off, since you will need them if something goes wrong. Next time just book with a carrier you can verify upfront, it saves you standing in a Denny's parking lot doing panic math. Did you end up letting him take it or did you pull the plug?
