Watching car carriers at the Richmond terminal go from paper clipboards to tablets over about 4 years
I drop off near the Richmond yard a few times a year and the difference really hit me back in March. About 4 years ago every driver walked in with a clipboard and a stack of paper gate passes, and it took 20 to 30 minutes just to clear the office. Now most of them scan a QR code on their phone and they're rolling in under 10. The dispatchers pushed it after the lot got backed up bad in 2021, and the paper line was the slow part every time. Curious if the smaller yards have made the switch too, or is it still clipboards out there?
The clipboard and I have a long history of me dropping it, losing the pen, or signing on the wrong line (my handwriting looks like a chicken got loose on the page), so the QR code thing would honestly save a guy like me. The paper line really was the slow part, no question, and 20 minutes of standing around just to hand over a sheet is rough. Small yards I've been to still run on clipboards and it feels like stepping back in time, though some of them seem to be testing tablets now. My guess is the small places will hold out until the tablet cost drops or a dispatcher gets fed up.
