Update: booked through a broker once and direct with a carrier once, and the difference cost me $400
Honestly I should've listened to the guys at the shop. Back in April I shipped a truck from Denver to Kansas City and went through a broker because it was $150 cheaper on the quote. What I didn't know is the broker just posts the load and the price can move around before anyone actually picks it up. My pickup window slid by four days and I had to pay a guy to move it off the street while I waited. Second time I called a small carrier out of Wichita directly, talked to the dispatcher by name, and got a written pickup window and a real invoice with the DOT number on it. That run cost me $400 more up front but it showed up on the exact day and nobody added fees at the end. The broker thing isn't always a scam, I get that, but I was flying blind and didn't even know who was hauling it until the driver called. Has anybody actually had a broker hold a pickup window like they promised, or is that just me getting lucky that first time?
