The photocopy trick that caught a broker's double charge in Reno

I shipped my F-150 from Reno to Boise last month and got a quote for $1,150. The broker sent the final invoice that said $1,150 but the driver's BOL showed $1,320, which I only spotted because I photocopied every paper they handed me at pickup. Turns out the broker had added an unauthorized fuel surcharge that wasn't in the email. I called their office with the BOL copy in hand and they refunded $170 within a day. Has anyone else caught discrepancies by keeping a paper trail like this, or do most people just trust the quote and get burned?
