Talking to a dispatcher in Phoenix changed how I check my straps
Was waiting on a load near the I-10 yard and got to chat with this old dispatcher, probably 60s, who's been doing runs since the 80s. He asked me how I secure my cars and I gave him my usual routine. He just shook his head and said, "You're strapping the car, not the transport. Watch the frame points." He pointed out two cars on a nearby carrier where the straps looked tight but were sitting on plastic trim. Said he's seen three cars slide in 40 years all because guys trust the visual tightness. I've been hauling for 5 years and never once thought about the actual contact point. Checked my last three loads when I got back, two had straps on the pinch welds wrong. Anyone else ever had a carrier inspect their rig and catch something that obvious?

Man, that dispatcher was looking out for you. Had a guy at a yard in Memphis point out my straps were crushing a plastic bumper cover once and I felt like a total rookie. It's wild how easy it is to just trust that a strap looks tight and call it good.
