My brother told me to always get the DOT number before booking, and he was right
Booked a carrier out of Tampa two months back without checking their DOT number first, and the guy subcontracted my car to some random hauler who showed up 4 hours late. My brother runs a dealership and told me to always look up the DOT number on the FMCSA site before paying a deposit. Now I check it every single time, has anyone else been burned by a broker who won't give that up front?

Heard a podcast a while back where this guy who moved cars for a living said the DOT number is the one thing a broker can't fake, since it ties straight to their safety record and insurance. He said if they dodge the question or keep stalling, that alone tells you plenty. Checked the FMCSA site myself after that and you can see complaints and out of service stuff right there in the open. My rule now is no DOT number, no deposit, and I don't care how good the price sounds. Pays to be a little annoying up front instead of chasing your car around for a month.
