Wet sanding by hand cost me a whole weekend until I tried a DA with 3000 grit
I spent 15 hours on a black fender from a 2018 Civic last month because I was still blocking it out by hand with 1500 grit and water. A guy at the shop in Boise showed me how to run a dual action sander with 3000 grit pads and then polish, and I cut that same job down to about 4 hours with a better finish. Does anyone here still finish by hand, or has everyone moved to the DA for the cut and buff step?
Hand work still has its place. A DA with 3000 grit is great on flat panels and clear coat, but on curves and edges you can burn through fast, and fixing a burn means repaint. I have seen guys save hours with the machine and then lose a whole panel because they got lazy at the edge. Hand blocking also keeps you honest about high spots since you feel them instead of smearing them around.
