Swapped out a HVLP gun for a standard spray gun on a job in Austin
I was fighting with orange peel on a custom metallic blue paint job for a week. Switched to a conventional spray gun at 40 psi and the finish came out glass-smooth on the first pass. Anyone else find certain guns just work better for metallic flake?

Oh man, same here actually! I had a pearl white job that was giving me nothing but trouble with my HVLP. Tried everything, different tips, thinning the paint more, slowing down my passes. Swapped to a conventional at around 45 psi and it laid down like butter. Something about the higher pressure just makes the metallic flakes lay flat instead of standing up and causing that weird mottled look. Makes me wonder why I even bother with the HVLP sometimes.

That's actually a pattern I've noticed with a lot of stuff in life. Sometimes the tool that's supposed to be "better" just makes things harder because it's too specialized. Same thing happened to me with my old air compressor. Bought a tiny quiet one to work in the garage, but it couldn't keep up with my DA sander. Went back to my loud old 30-gallon tank and it just works.

Right there with you. Switched to conventional for metallics and never looked back.
