PSA: My clear coat was always coming out a bit cloudy and I finally figured out why

For years, I'd get this slight haze on some jobs, nothing major but it bugged me. I thought it was my spray gun setup or the booth air. The tip off was a job on a black Honda Civic last Thursday. I was buffing the final panel and my buddy, who runs the shop next door, walked in and said, 'You still using that old tack cloth from the open box?' I was. He tossed me a fresh one from a sealed pack and told me to wipe down a test spot. The difference was night and day. That old cloth was leaving a tiny residue I couldn't even see, and the new clear was laying over it and clouding up. I felt so dumb, but also relieved. Has anyone else had a simple supply issue mess up their finish like that?

Man, that's such a classic shop headache. Been there with old masking tape leaving a gummy line. What a relief to finally find the fix, right?

Nah, that gummy line adds character. Never bothered me once.
