From my bench: Heat guns for paint removal seem overrated to me

Everyone at my shop loves using heat guns to take off paint. They talk about how quick it is and how little mess it makes. I tried it on a truck fender last week and ended up with a sticky mess that was hard to clean. The heat also made the metal too soft in spots, which worried me about the shape holding. Now I stick with sanding blocks and a good scraper for most jobs. It takes more elbow grease, but I feel like I have better control over the finish. Maybe I'm missing something, but heat guns just don't click for me the way they do for others.

Your sticky mess story reminds me of when I melted paint into a gummy nightmare on a door panel.

Actually that weird gummy paint stage is kind of fascinating if you think about it. Like the whole chemical structure is breaking down into this new, awful substance. Maybe we're all sitting on a potential new art supply and just don't know it. I mean it's still gross, but idk, could be useful for some weird art project. Maybe it's just me but now I'm curious what other stuff melts into a new form like that.

My uncle's garage still has a plastic blob from a melted model car.
