Customer complaint about my filler work changed my sanding method

Had a guy come back to my shop in Portland three months after I fixed his fender, said he could see the repair line in the sun. I was using 80 grit to start and jumping straight to 180, thinking that was enough. Now I step through 80, 120, then 180, and I spend an extra 15 minutes on the feathering with a DA. Has anyone else had a comeback that forced them to slow down their process?

Stick a strip of double sided tape on the back of your sandpaper before you slap it on the pad, keeps the edges from curling up and burning out. I go through maybe a third of the paper I used to since I started doing that. Also grab a sanding block that actually fits your hand, not those cheap foam ones that flex and round over your edges. Learned that one the hard way after ruining a bunch of corners on a walnut table. Slow speed is your friend too, crank it up and you just burn the wood and clog the paper
