Appreciation post: A painter told me my clear coat was too thick and it saved a job

I was spraying a 2020 Civic's hood and thought more clear meant better shine, but the guy mixing paint next to me said 'You're laying it on like syrup, it's gonna orange peel.' I switched to three lighter coats with a longer flash time and the finish came out glass-smooth. How do you judge the right amount of clear on a panel?

Nah but I've gone the other way with it. I laid heavy clear on a buddy's truck once and it actually leveled out perfect with no sanding needed. Some of these factory jobs come thin as hell and you can burn through them in one pass if you're not careful. I'd rather sand out a little orange peel than risk rubbing through to basecoat on a respray. Three light coats just means more room for error if you ask me.
