That one detour on Moreland Avenue saved me 20 minutes last Tuesday

I always take Moreland to get from my place in East Atlanta to the office near Buckhead. Last Tuesday traffic was backed up past the Glenwood intersection for no obvious reason. I got frustrated and cut through that little neighborhood behind the old gas station, ended up on a side street I'd never even noticed before. Somehow I popped out right past the bottleneck and got to work with time to spare. Has anyone else found a random shortcut like that around town that just works?

Wait, is that the little cut through past the old Texaco? I found a similar one off Briarcliff that shaved a solid 15 minutes off my commute last Thursday when 85 was a parking lot.

You really think that cut-through is worth it? I tried it twice last week and both times I got stuck behind people who were clearly using it as a secret GPS route. The old Texaco one is fine if you hit it at 6am but after that it turns into a nightmare. I actually timed it on Thursday and it only saved me like 3 minutes because of all the stop signs and the school zone slowdown. Meanwhile Briarcliff has that one light that ALWAYS takes forever. I'd rather sit on 85 with my coffee and let the traffic move at its own pace than deal with all that stop and go on side streets. Respect for trying though, I get why people like the idea of saving time.
