I finally cracked the secret to fast lane merging in downtown traffic

Last Tuesday during rush hour on 75/85 I watched this silver sedan glide across three lanes without a single honk, so I tailed them to learn the move. They were timing their merges with the brake lights of the cars ahead, not the gaps, and it cut my usual 20 minute nightmare down to 9. Has anyone else tried watching the cars two ahead instead of the bumper right in front?
