Stacking shots by hand beat my fancy software
I spent a whole night trying to get my Jupiter photos sharp with the paid stacking program, but the results kept coming out blurry. Then I tried manually aligning just 40 frames in GIMP, using the moving layers trick I saw in an old forum post. It took about an hour, but the detail on the bands and the Great Red Spot came out way better than anything the auto software gave me. Has anyone else had better luck doing it the slow way instead of trusting the algorithms?

Ha, "trusting the algorithms" is exactly where I keep going wrong with everything, not just planets. My auto-stack always gives me a blurry potato while my shaky hand-stacked version looks like it came from Hubble by accident. Maybe the computers just know I don't deserve sharp Jupiter yet.
