Overheard a guy at the star party say 'I can't believe that's just a gas cloud' while pointing at the Orion Nebula shot on my phone.

It made me realize how much a decent photo can change someone's whole idea of what's up there, even if it's just a phone pic through an eyepiece.

My buddy's first time looking at Saturn through my old scope, he just kept saying "that's real" over and over. A photo makes it permanent, something you can show people who weren't there. It bridges the gap between the fuzzy gray blob in the eyepiece and the mind blowing reality of what you're actually seeing. That guy at the star party finally got it because he could hold the proof in his hand.

Come on @the_gavin, it's just a picture of a planet... people get way too deep about this stuff.

Is it really that deep though? I mean yeah Saturn is cool and all, but @the_gavin is acting like that picture is gonna change someone's life forever. People take pics of cool stuff all the time, doesn't mean it's some profound moment. I've seen the ringed planet through a decent scope myself and honestly it's just a tiny little thing floating there. A photo doesn't suddenly make it more real than what you see with your own eyes. Let's not pretend a printout is gonna fix someone's existential crisis or whatever.
