I finally got the Orion Nebula to look right after I stopped stacking 50 frames and just shot 15 good ones

Totally get that. Chasing more frames can really mess up a clean shot. I did the same thing on the Andromeda galaxy last year, kept adding data thinking it would fix my mediocre tracking. Ended up with a noisy, soft mess. Sometimes less really is more if the subs are solid.

Yeah, "less is more if the subs are solid" is so true, @lilychen. I read an article once that said stacking more bad data just teaches the software what noise looks like. It really stuck with me.
