An old-timer told me to try stacking 3 shorter exposures instead of one long one

Been doing astrophotography for about 2 years and always went for those 5-minute single shots. A guy at the local club said I'd get less noise and better detail if I stacked shorter frames. Tried it with 3 two-minute exposures of Orion last month and the difference was honestly huge. Has anyone else found stacking beats long exposures for most targets?

Huh. Three shots isn't exactly a rigorous test though.

Read a Cloudy Nights thread saying 30 second subs stacked beat long ones for noise.

Nah, one solid long exposure still gives you way more depth
