Rant: found out the average person walks by 36 black bears in their life and I can't stop thinking about it
Saw a wildlife stat page that said most people pass within 20 yards of a black bear around 36 times across their whole life without ever knowing it. That number hit me hard because I hike the same 4 mile loop near Asheville almost every weekend. Now every snapped twig has me spinning around like an idiot. Does anyone actually carry bear spray on short day hikes, or am I overthinking a stat from some random site?
Same trail loop for me too, except mine is a 3 mile out and back near Boone. I saw a cub in a tree last spring about 15 feet off the path and didn't notice it until some guy behind me pointed up. Walked that same stretch probably fifty times before that and never once looked up. Now I catch myself staring at every oak like a weirdo. Started carrying spray in my hip pocket just to shut my brain up, even on quick after work walks.
