My client in Seattle said my project updates were 'just a list of tasks' and needed more 'why', so I switched my whole format.

Yeah, what did you change it to? I mean, @luna519 is right, it's super common feedback. I started adding a line at the top of each update like "This work moves us closer to X goal because..." and then list the tasks. It forces me to connect the dots for them.
