My brother's career advice cost me a $450 course fee in Denver

So my older brother, who works in tech sales, kept telling me to skip the certifications and just learn everything on YouTube. Said employers only care about your portfolio. I took his word for it, skipped a cloud computing course I was eyeing, and spent 4 months piecing together free tutorials. Then I applied for a junior admin role and the hiring manager flat out said they screen resumes for that specific cert. I paid the $450 fee the next day and passed the exam in 6 weeks. He means well but his field is totally different. Has anyone else gotten confident advice from a sibling that backfired in your industry?

My buddy took his older sister's advice to skip the required safety training for his electrician apprenticeship. Cost him two months of delay and a big fine from the union. Sisters know plumbing, not wiring, I guess.
