Hit 100 paint jobs this year and the numbers surprised me
I've been keeping a log of every house I paint this year, and just cracked 100 last week. Turns out my crew spent 40 more hours on prep work than actual painting, which made me rethink how I bid jobs. Has anyone else tracked their hours and found something that shifted their whole approach?

Oh man the prep work thing hit me hard. I tracked my hours last year and found out I was spending like twice as long on masking and taping than I thought, totally messed up my bids too. Makes you wonder how many jobs we've been lowballing without realizing it.

...that 40 more hours on prep than painting thing is wild, honestly. Like @the_robert said, we all know prep takes forever but seeing it in real numbers like that is shocking. I bet you were lowballing yourself hard on those bids without even knowing it. Prep work is the invisible part nobody sees but it eats up so much time and money if you're not paying attention. I can't believe it's that big of a difference though, 40 hours is basically a whole extra week of just taping and masking for nothing. That's the kind of reality check that makes you want to redo every quote you've ever sent out.

Wait, you really found that prep took more time than the actual painting? @juliawalker I used to think folks were exaggerating about prep work but now I'm second guessing every bid I've ever written.
