Had a strange encounter with a guy at the airport last month

I was waiting for my flight at O'Hare and this older gentleman sat down next to me. He asked what I did for a living, and when I said real estate, he just shook his head and said "buy low, sell high is for stock traders, not homes." Then he told me his daughter bought her first house in 2020 for $215,000 and now it's worth $310,000, so he figures she's stuck there forever because she can't afford anything else. I didn't know what to say to that. Has anyone else run into random strangers who drop unexpected wisdom on you?

Honestly that's just how life works now, everything's frozen in place.

Right, nothing ever changes except my rent which goes up every single year like clockwork. Guess "frozen in place" means something different to my landlord.

Started negotiating my lease renewal two months before it ended. Landlord wanted a 12% increase, I sent him screenshots of three comparable units in the building going for less than what I was paying. Got it down to 4%. You can push back more than you'd think, most people just don't bother.
