Got a reality check from a painter about my technique for staining fence boards

My neighbor who paints houses for a living watched me staining my cedar fence last summer and told me I was wiping off the excess way too fast. He showed me to let the stain sit for 10 minutes before wiping so the wood actually absorbs it deep. Has anyone else had a pro call them out on something you thought you were doing right?

My buddy did the same thing and had to redo his whole fence like a month later.

Ended up helping my neighbor re-stain his deck twice because the weather shifted.
