Update: lost $85 on a "beginner oil paint set" from a garage sale in Bakersfield, three tubes were solid as rocks
Seller swore it was barely used and only 6 months old. Got it home and the cadmium yellow and two others were dried into little bricks, caps fused shut. Only the titanium white was usable, so I basically paid $85 for one tube. If you are buying paint secondhand, squeeze the tubes first and check the caps before handing over cash. Anyone got a trick for reviving tubes that are only partly dried out, or should I just toss them?
Three tubes were solid as rocks" is the part that stings. I've had luck with the partly dried ones using a little linseed oil, a few drops down the tube, then work the cap loose with pliers and mash the paint with a palette knife. Let it sit a day before you judge it. Poke a wire down the neck too, dried paint clogs right there and makes you think the whole tube is gone. The brick hard tubes are done though, no saving those. For $85 I'd try the oil trick on the two softest ones and call it a loss on the yellow.
