Gave away my crusty old watercolor pan set at the Portland swap and the new $60 one I kept just sits there
So at the swap meet in Portland two months back I brought two watercolor sets, a beat up pan set I got used for $8 and a shiny new $60 one I bought on a whim. Figured the old one was junk so I put it in the free pile and kept the fancy one. Turns out the cheap pans rewet in like 5 seconds and the new one takes forever to wake up, so now I'm texting the person who took my old set asking if they want to trade back. Has anyone else noticed older paint just behaves better than the brand new stuff, or am I making that up?
Old pans often have more glycerin and less filler in them, which is why they wake up fast, so it's not just nostalgia. Also, rewetting speed comes from how the paint was made, not the age itself, so a fresh cheap set can behave the same way.
