Found out one tube of cadmium red costs more per ounce than a good steak dinner where I live.
I was looking at my half-used paint stash and price-checked a fresh tube of Winsor & Newton cadmium red online and realized I've been casually squeezing out something worth $4.50 per ounce while my fettuccine alfredo at Luigi's last Friday was $3.80 per ounce, so how do you all justify using expensive pigments for practice sketches?

My wallet's been on a permanent hunger strike since I started painting.

Just a small thing - that $4.50 per ounce is actually for the paint straight from the tube, not mixed with medium or thinned out for washes. In my experience a little goes a long way with these pigments, so each brushstroke costs way less than a bite of that fettuccine. Value for practice sketches depends on whether you're learning color mixing or just playing around.
