Vent: I thought those little jam jars on cheese boards were just for looks
Bought a 3 pack of Bonne Maman at Jungle Jim's in Cincinnati about 2 months ago just to fill empty spots on my boards. Turns out a tiny spoon of fig jam on a sharp white cheddar is way better than plain crackers. Now my plates never have a bare corner. What spreads are you all putting next to your hard cheeses?
Man, same exact thing happened to me. I grabbed a little jar of pepper jelly at a farmer's market just to take up space on a board and now I buy it by the case. A dab of that on a piece of aged gouda is unreal, the sweet and the heat just wake the cheese up. I also got hooked on hot honey drizzled over brie, and a good fig spread with manchego is hard to beat. My rule now is every hard cheese gets a buddy, something fruity or spicy to cut through the salt. Once you start doing it, a plain cracker next to cheddar just feels sad.
