Rant: That $85 cheese board set from the trendy kitchen store
Bought a fancy acacia wood cheese board with built-in tools last month and the knife handle split after two uses. My $10 thrift store slate board has outlasted it easily. Has anyone else had luck with metal vs. wood snack boards?

Is it just me or do expensive things break way faster now?

Honestly, I've had the opposite experience. The cheap stuff seems to fall apart in my hands while the mid-range stuff I bought years ago is still kicking. My KitchenAid mixer is like 12 years old and runs like new, but I've burned through three cheap blenders in the same timeframe. Might be a case-by-case thing though since I know some brands have definitely gone downhill on quality.

Think my wallet just filed for divorce after reading this, honestly. I bought a "premium" toaster last year and it burned my bagel so bad the smoke alarm got a better workout than I do. Meanwhile my grandma's ancient Sunbeam from 1987 is still toasting like it's nobody's business. In my experience, the whole expensive = better thing has been super hit or miss, but maybe I just have terrible luck with appliances. Or maybe they're all secretly programmed to break right when the warranty expires, your mileage may vary of course.
