Rant: my aunt served a snack plate at Easter with wet cucumber slices touching the cheese and I about lost it
I was at my aunt Linda's house in Sacramento last weekend for Easter and she brought out this plate that honestly made me want to say something. She had sliced cucumbers sitting right up against the cheddar, not even a cracker between them, and by the time we got to it everything was just one soggy mess. I counted at least 9 wet cucumber rounds bleeding into the cheese and the crackers underneath were soft as bread. Here is the thing, this is not a one time slip, 3 years ago at her Memorial Day thing she did the exact same thing and I let it slide. Moisture kills a plate faster than anything, it ruins the crunch and the cheese gets that weird sweaty film on it. I know it sounds picky but you have to keep wet stuff in its own little bowl or at least give it a paper towel pat down first. Has anyone else had a family member do this and how did you bring it up without starting a fight at the table?
Cucumber juice on cheddar is a crime scene, not a snack. That plate was doomed the second she put them side by side, no cracker wall, no paper towel, nothing. Three years running means she's not gonna change on her own, so next time just volunteer to make the plate yourself or bring your own stuff in a container. If you say anything, keep it light like hey can I move the cukes so the cheese stays dry, and do it with a smile so it doesn't turn into a thing. Nobody's Easter needs to end with soggy crackers and hurt feelings.
