Last Friday my snack plate was a disaster and I still think about it

I put together what I thought was a solid plate for a small get together. Crackers, some nice cheddar, grapes, and a honey drizzle. But I made a critical mistake. I put the cut apples on the plate two hours before anyone showed up. By the time people started eating, the apples were brown and sad looking. The whole plate looked like it had been sitting out for days. Someone even asked if the apples were supposed to look like that. I should have just sliced them right before serving. Has anyone else ruined a plate with bad timing on fruit?

Ngl the real crime wasn't the apples but skipping a lemon juice splash to save the whole plate.

My buddy Dave did this exact thing at a barbecue last summer with sliced pears and they turned brown before anyone even got a drink. He tried to cover it by saying it was a "rustic presentation" but nobody bought it.
