Just hit 50 snack plates this year and it got me thinking about portion sizes vs variety
So I counted last night. 50 snack plates since January. That's almost one every 4 days. Wild.
Here's my debate. Side A: bigger portions but fewer items. Like a plate with just 3 good cheeses and some crackers. Keeps it simple. Side B: lots of small things. 8 different items but tiny amounts of each. More interesting to eat.
I've been doing mostly side B but last night I tried a 3 item plate and it felt... cleaner? Less decision fatigue. But my girlfriend said it was boring.
What's your take? Do you aim for a certain number of items per plate or just go by how hungry you are?

50 plates and zero therapy sessions, unlike @lee_grant97's buddy. Proud of my boring cheese life.

50 snack plates in a year sounds about right for me too honestly. Your mileage may vary but I've found that 4-6 items is the sweet spot for me. Anything less than that and I feel like I'm just eating a boring snack not a proper plate. But more than 6 and it gets chaotic with too many flavors fighting each other. The three item plate thing makes sense though - less fussing about what goes together. I did a 4 item plate last week with two meats and two cheeses and it was the most relaxed I've felt eating all month. Girlfriend called it boring too but who cares when you're getting good cheese in your belly.

Had a buddy who got REALLY into snack plates during the pandemic. He started keeping a log of every single one in a notebook. Had categories like "savory balance" and "crunch factor." Got to the point where his girlfriend made him see a therapist about it. Not even joking. The therapist actually told him it was fine and to keep doing it because it made him happy. So now he's out there with his notebook at parties ranking people's charcuterie boards. We don't invite him to stuff anymore but I bet his snack game is the best in the state.
