Warning: the bone pile at the museum in Cody, WY taught me more in 20 minutes than 3 books did
I was at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody last month and wandered into the Draper Natural History Museum part by accident. There's this big display of animal bones with cut marks on them, and little signs pointing out where the edges are smooth and where they're jagged. The smooth edges happened when someone used a stone tool, the jagged ones happened when an animal chewed on them. It sounds simple but I stood there for 20 minutes just looking at which was which. Now when I see photos of bone finds online I actually check the edges first before I read what the experts say. Has anyone else learned a basic skill like that from a display instead of a book? It made me want to go back and look at the rest of the exhibits way slower.
