That time a retired professor warned me about fake Roman coins on eBay and I didn't listen.

Bought a 'rare' denarius from a seller in Bulgaria for $150 and it turned out to be a modern cast copy that fell apart under a magnifier. Anyone else get burned trusting online coin dealers over actual archaeologists?

Man I gotta disagree a little here. Old professors know their stuff but they're not always right about the market itself. I've bought plenty of coins from random sellers online and a good chunk of them checked out fine with a local numismatic club. The problem is more about knowing who to trust rather than trusting nobody at all. Like sure that Bulgarian deal sounds sketchy now but there are legit dealers in Eastern Europe with solid reputations. Throw in a little research and a cheap loupe and you can filter out most of the fakes yourself without needing a PhD.

Yep, got hosed on a "Celtic" coin from a UK seller once. Professor was probably right, huh.
