Our survey grid in southern Utah hit 11 sites in 4 days, and one thing kept it from being perfect
Last week our crew was walking a grid outside Kanab, Utah, and we pulled 11 sites in 4 days. That almost never happens. Most days you walk 8 miles and find a handful of flakes. This stretch had a buried hearth, two rock rings, and a scatter of obsidian that traced back to a source 90 miles away. But here is the part that worries me. We logged the GPS points on a tablet that lost signal every afternoon, so three of the site boundaries are rough guesses. If anyone else has run into spotty coverage in canyon country, what did you use as backup? I do not want to hand in coordinates that are off by 30 feet.
